Helen Lavina Hood, 82, died July 19, 2008, at Dillon Living Center, Hutchinson.

She was born Sept. 8, 1925, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Hutchinson, KS, the daughter of Clarence and Virgie Peckover Mather.

She attended Allen, Liberty and Hutchinson High School, except for the last year and a half when she moved to Mountainburg, Ark., when World War II began, and she graduated there in 1943.

She had worked for the Reno County Register of Deeds Office for 18 years and retired from there. She moved to California to work for the Voice of Prophecy as an administrative assistant in the Trust Department.

She had previously attended Community Church of the Brethren but now belonged to the Seventh Day Adventist Church. She had directed the adult choirs at both churches, as well as the church choirs in Arkansas, Oregon and California. Music was her first love.

She had met Nuel Hood while in Portland, Ore., then 48 years later they married April 18, 1992, at Thousand Oaks, Calif. He died Nov. 13, 2003.

Survivors include: a daughter, Bobbi Maddox, Corpus Christi, Texas; stepchildren, Jack Hood and wife Dee, Frank Hood and wife April, and Fred Hood and wife Louise, all of Portland, Ore.; four nephews and their wives, Russell and Sherry Achilles, Stanley and Bonnie Achilles, Pastor William and Karen Achilles, and Kenneth and Sharyl Achilles; and three nieces, Charlene Stafford, Pamela Mather, and Phyllis Mather; five step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Robert Alva Mather, two sisters, Virginia Mae Achilles, and Patricia Jean Mather, and a grandson.

Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Birger Draget presiding. Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Inurnment will be with her husband Nuel in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Ore., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Reno County, or the Faith in Action Volunteer Corp, in care of the mortuary.
