Obituary

PARTRIDGE - Abe Bontrager, 95, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011.

He was born Sept. 9, 1915, at rural Haven, the son of Daniel Y. and Susan Nissley Bontrager.

He grew up farming and painting, was a member of Partridge Community Church, Odd Fellows, Partridge Gun Club, and farming with Viola until 1957, when he moved his family into the home he built in Partridge. He drove the school bus and was custodian for Partridge Schools from 1950 to 1972 and was a member of Reno County Custodians Association. During this time he also worked for the city of Partridge, maintaining streets and the sewage departments, as well as reading gas meters. He spent most of his vacation time helping friends with harvest and fieldwork. In 1972, he began working for the South Hutchinson municipalities retiring in 1980. After retirement he returned to his roots as a farmer helping friends with harvest and fieldwork. He also took up golfing and crocheting.

On Sept. 14, 2007, he and Viola moved to an apartment at Mennonite Manor. There he enjoyed playing Wii bowling, bingo and word find puzzles. His biggest joy was spending time with family.

On June 3, 1945, he married Viola G. Koestel in Partridge. She survives.

Other survivors and their spouses include: two daughters, Phyllis and Larry Peer of Englewood, Colo., and Donna and Maurice Bastion of Hutchinson; six brothers and sisters, Ira and Zell Bontrager of Springfield, Mo., Eli and Maxine Bontrager of Newton, David and Rosalee Bontrager of Hutchinson, Katie Mae and Herman Popp of South Hutchinson, Emma Lou and Jerry Saunders, Venita, OK; Glen and Mary Lou Bontrager of Scott's, Mich.; three grandchildren, Julie and Wolfgang Raschka of Vienna, Austria, Michael and Arden Bastion, and Jared Bastion, all of Hutchinson; eight great-grandchildren, Benedict and Beatrice, Madeleine, Teige and Dorran, Katelyn, Kylee and Mauryn. He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers and sisters, Dan, Roy and J.D. Bontrager, Ida Yoder and Clara Yoder.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Elliott Chapel, with Reverend R. Samuel Askew officiating. Burial will be in Partridge Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson.

In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to the Partridge Community Church in care of Elliott Mortuary.
