Obituary

(Adelyn) Adeline Ruth Taylor Dean Emery, of Hutchinson, died Aug. 2, 2015, at the Dillon Living Center, Hutchinson. She was born on July 11, 1908, at 328 East 10th Ave., Hutchinson, the daughter of Clarence Theodore and Hulda Ethel (Graves) Taylor.

In 1926, she graduated from Arlington Rural High School as valedictorian and was a member of the Reno County Championship Girls Basketball team and from McPherson College in 1932, where she was voted most outstanding graduate of her class. She attended Colorado University, Missouri University and Hutchinson Junior College. She was head of the Women's Physical Education Department for 2 years at McPherson College. She also taught in schools in Reno County (Mitchell, Buckeye, a one-room school, Yoder and Prosperity) and was a substitute teacher at Hutchinson High School. She was one of the founders of Hadley Day Care, she co-managed a volunteer Head Start at the Presbyterian Church for five years, and worked as a volunteer at Avenue A School for two years. She was on the board of the Emergency Shelter Home. From 1983 to 2007, she headed a group that met weekly to make comforts, a type of quilt for the Mennonite Central Committee Auction and for charity. She was baptized and joined the Arlington Presbyterian Church, later joining the Partridge Community Church, and then Grace Episcopal Church in Hutchinson.

On Feb. 11, 1934, she married Albert Leroy Dean of McPherson in Manhattan. To this union was born four sons and a daughter. Albert died on Jan. 14, 1979. She then married Karl Philip Emery on April 4, 1987. He died on Feb. 16, 1991. Survivors include: three sons, Albert Dean of Charlotte, NC, Nicholas and Louise Dean of Arvada, Colo., Anthony and Lawrie Dean of Long Grove, Ill.; a daughter, Marilyn Mitchell of Cary, NC; daughter-in-law, Geraldine Dean of Waltham, Mass.; and stepdaughter, Diedre Moore of Stockton; 11 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: a son, John Dean of Waltham, Mass.; a grandson, Allen Dean; and a stepson, Marc Emery of Hutchinson.

She was proud of having climbed Longs Peak and the two Arapahoe Peaks in Colorado while in school there. Her watercolor paintings were displayed at the Hutchinson Public Library with proceeds going to Hurricane Katrina libraries. She belonged to a writing group and enjoyed creating a new item for each meeting. She has written two books (unpublished) of poetry and has had two articles published in "Kanhistque Magazine." Adelyn liked to read, to play bridge, to dance and to travel.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Grace Episcopal Church, 2 Hyde Park Drive, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Larry Carver officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Friday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
