Obituary

Albert Eugene "Al" Smith, 86, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, June 30, 2013. He was born April 22, 1927, in Hutchinson, the son of Bert and Iva Kelley Smith.

His life of service started at a very early age. He went to work at the age of 12 to help take care of his mother and sister, Charlotte. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country for 2 1/2 years.

After his military service he returned to Hutchinson, where he met JoAnne St. Clair, the love of his life. Their love is inspiring and eternal. From that love and commitment to one another, they were blessed with seven children, 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A true legacy to a life of devotion to his family and most certainly his proudest accomplishment. His work history included: Morton Salt Company, Gas Service Company, and the Reno County Sheriff's Department.

His survivors include: his beloved wife, JoAnne; sons, Galen (Diane), Galord, Mark (Debbie), Lance (Angie); daughters, Joleen Smith and Doreen Hawkins (Jay); daughter-in-law, Shelley Stephens; grandchildren, Roman Smith, Angela Lawless, Brad Smith, Taron Smith, Christopher Nolde, Andrea Smyth, Tristan Smith, Kelsey Schneider, Brecken Rumsey, Corey Smith, Kaydee Nolde, Kristin Hoffman, Heather Gordon, Haley Crump, Brittany Aden, Dallas Smith and Chloe Hawkins; great-grandchildren, Braden, Lillian, Michael, Jersey, Kaiden, Mason, Shawn, Braydee, Eva, Quinn and Chase. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bruce; and a daughter-in-law, Shirley.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Willard Stafford officiating. Burial will be in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with Navy military honors. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorial gifts may be made to Cancer Council of Reno County or the Reno County Police, Sheriff and Fire Chaplaincy, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
