Alvin Dale
Schrag
February 1, 1938 – August 11, 2019
Alvin Dale Schrag, 81, of Hutchinson, died August 11, 2019, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, after a long battle with cancer. He was born February 1, 1938, in Castleton, KS, the second son of John A. and Selma (Graber) Schrag. Dale spent his early childhood growing up on a farm near Castleton, where he enjoyed playing with his older brother, Charles, who passed away in 1945, just before Dale's seventh birthday.
Dale graduated from Central Christian High School and attended Bethel College, then transferred to Kansas State University to complete his degree in Agricultural Engineering. Following his graduation, Dale went to serve at the Rosthern Youth Farm in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, Canada, as an alternative service to military service for conscientious objectors. Here, he met the love of his life, Verna Klaassen, whom he married on July 24, 1964. After their marriage, they moved to Guelph, Ontario, where Dale worked for WC Woods Company. Their son, Ryan, was born in 1966. Dale and Verna then moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, to be closer to Verna's sister, Elizabeth. Their daughter, Heather, was born there in 1967. Shortly after this addition, they moved to Pretty Prairie to be closer to Dale's family. After moving to Kansas, Dale worked for Master Machine Tools and Reno County Public Works Department. He retired from Reno County in 2003.
Dale enjoyed fishing, tinkering in his shop, fixing things around the house, attending auction sales (where he always found bargains), creating gadgets to help his family, and traveling to visit family.
They joined First Mennonite Church in Pretty Prairie, where Dale was a faithful member for many years. Dale and Verna moved to Mennonite Friendship Manor in 2016, after selling the house where they raised their family and lived for almost 48 years. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Hutchinson.
Dale is survived by: his wife of 55 years, Verna of South Hutchinson; son, Ryan Schrag (Jessica) of Fort Lauderdale, FL; daughter, Heather Roush (Mike) of Marysville, WA; grandson, Hadrian Schrag; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Klaassen; and brother-in-law, Jake Klaassen (Fern).
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles.
