Alvin R. "Smitty" Smith, 76, died March 26, 2007, at his home, Hutchinson.
He was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Blackwater, Mo., the son of George D. Smith and Kathryn R. Hamilton Brayman. In 1949, he graduated from Pilot Grove,( Mo.) High School. A resident of Hutchinson, he had been a rancher and plant technician for Western Union with 30 years of service, retiring in 1984.
He attended Castleton Union Church and was a member of Pretty Prairie Saddle Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Bob Campbell Post No. 68, Hutchinson. He was a U.S. Army Corporal, serving in the Korean War in the 5th Armored Division.
On March 5, 1955, he married Ida J. "Josie" Overstreet in Boonville, Mo. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Gayle and wife, Cindi, Hutchinson, and Gary, Hutchinson; two daughters, Carol Hartman and husband, Max and Connie Stewart and husband, Mike, all of Marshfield, Mo.; a stepbrother, Melvin Smith, Boonville, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, Clint and wife, Stacie, Hutchinson, Carrie Clark and husband, Jody, Topeka, Cammie Bowman and husband, Casey, Wichita, Lee Smith and wife, Ashley, Kingman, Craig and wife Cari, Topeka, Shevy Smith, Nashville, Tenn., Joni Day and husband, Jeremy, Marshfield, Mo., Luke Hartman, Springfield, Mo., Les Hartman and wife Arwen, Marshfield, Mo., Jaysa Hartman, Marshfield, Mo., Blair Wilkerson and Monica Stewart, both of Marshfield, Mo.; seven great grandchildren, Daelyn, Dalton, Jaci, Taylee, Gwen, Lillian and Kennedy.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; three sisters; and a niece, Wander Eckerle.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastors Robert Ulrich and Howard Wagler presiding. The casket will remain closed. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Darlow Cemetery, with military graveside honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
