Obituary

Dr. Armour H. Evans, 99, died Dec. 12, 2005, at Wesley Towers, Hutchinson.

He was born May 28, 1906, in Wellington, the son of R.W. and Maggie Nee Lambe Evans. He graduated from Wellington High School, Southwestern College in 1929, Iliff School of Theology in 1932, Iliff School of Theology in 1934, and received his Master Hospital Administration at Northwestern University in 1948. He was a Pastor at Wichita Woodland Methodist Church from 1932 to 1934, Andover Methodist Church from 1934 to 1936, Kechi Methodist Church from 1936 to 1940 and Oberlin Methodist Church from 1940 to 1942. He also was a Pastor in Ness City in 1960, Colby in 1964, Newton in 1968, assistant Pastor at First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, from 1972 to 1977, Chaplain at Wesley Towers from 1977 to 1989 and Pastor at Fairview United Methodist Church, Nickerson from 1973 to 1996. He was an assistant superintendent at Wesley Hospital, Wichita from 1947 to 1957 and was an administrator at Pikeville Methodist Hospital, Pikeville, Ky. from 1957 to 1960.

He was a member of Fellow American College Hospital Administrators, Kansas State Board of Health, serving as vice president in 1957 and was chairman of Central Kansas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1962 to 1968. He was on the board of trustees at Wesley Towers from 1965 to 1977, Kansas Wesleyan, Salina, from 1966 to 1974, Hadley Memorial Hospital, Hays, 1965 to 1968, Trustee American Protestant Hospital Association from 1953 to 1956, Trustee American Hospital Association from 1952 to 1954 and Paul Harris Fellow-Rotary International 1991. He also helped establish Friendship Meals, chaired the Meals on Wheels program and the RSVP program, all in Hutchinson. He also taught Bible Ethics and Philosophy at Hutchinson Community College and some classes within the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory. He was a volunteer Chaplain at Hutchinson Hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as Chaplain from 1942 to 1946 and Army Reserves veteran from 1947 to 1953, retiring in the rank of Major.

On Sept. 8, 1932, he married Dorothy Suter in Hunter, Okla. She died Dec. 18, 1994.

Survivors include: a son, Dr. John E. Evans and wife, Cathy, Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Mary Alice McLeod and husband, Bob, Cherokee, Okla.; a daughter-in-law, Carmen Evans Fergeus, Columbus, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James A. Evans M.D.; and two brothers, Robert and Glen Evans.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Wesley Towers Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Revs. Mark Conard, Nick Warner, Robert B. Brooks and Rick Saylor presiding. Graveside service will be Friday at 3 p.m. in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Wellington, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Dr. Evans will lie in state from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wesley Towers Chapel. Family will receive friends following the service.
