Obituary

SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Bertha L. Smith, 75, died Sept. 12, 2006, at Mennonite Manor, South Hutchinson.

She was born Nov. 1, 1930, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Elmer Vernon and Beulah Dittmeyer Nichols. A lifetime area resident, she was a former bookkeeper for Gordon's Ladies Wear and an administrative assistant for S.R.S., retiring in 1993. In her retirement, she was a floor associate for Wal-Mart.

She belonged to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was an R.S.V.P. volunteer.

Survivors include: a son, William Roach, Hutchinson; four daughters, Jacquie Lee Vandecoevering, Colton, Ore., Janice Lynn LeGore, Mololla, Ore., Connie Hendrickson, Hutchinson, and Stephanie (Roach) Lyngen, Abilene; a brother, James Otis Nichols Sr., Hutchinson; three sisters, Betty Cline, Pretty Prairie, Barbara McAllister, Dodge City, and Billie Arnold, Grand Lake, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Leon Roach; and three brothers, William, Ralph and George Nichols.

Memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with Bishop Bruce Bastian presiding. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the mortuary. Cremation has taken place.
