Bertie Hughs, 70, died Monday Jan. 18, 2010, at Galichia Heart Hospital, Wichita.
She was born Oct. 10, 1939, in Hutchinson, to Lloyd Alvin and Ruth Carolyn Ramsey Hammar.
She was a graduate of Bucklin, Kan. High School in 1957, and the Adela Hale Business College in 1958. She was a secretary at Cessna and later Eaton Corp. for 30 years, retiring in 2001. She was a member of The Corner Stone Baptist Church and was organist there for many years. Following their retirement, she and her husband traveled throughout the U.S. assisting in the development of new and small churches.
On Aug. 23, 1958, she married Lawrence R. Hughs in Bucklin, Kan. He survives.
Other survivors include: son, Ben and wife Kathy of Ferndale, Wash.; daughter, Laralita Stewart and husband Pastor Jonathan Stewart, Arlington, TX; brother, Alvin Hammar and wife Pat, Wichita, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Hannah Sievers and husband Chris, Jonathan Stewart II, Jerushah Stewart, Lyle Hughs, Jesse Hughs, Clara Hughs, and Kami Franz; one great-grandchild, Gabrielle Sievers. She was preceded in death by a son, Joe, and her parents.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Elliott Chapel with Pastors Larry Wedel, Jonathan Stewart, Jonathan Stewart II, Carl Livingston and Jerry Berry. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Friends may sign the book 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson. At Bertie's request, her body was donated to the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Memorials may be sent in lieu of flowers to an organization that prints Bibles for missionaries: Victory Baptist Press, in care of the mortuary.
