Betty J. Carey, 87, of Hutchinson, died May 28, 2012, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. Betty was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Arthur A. and Violet Noll Kootz.
Betty was a bookkeeper at Montgomery Ward Store in Hutchinson, and later worked as the bookkeeper at Central Electric Motor Repair. After retirement, she volunteered to do income taxes at the Salvation Army and at Mission Place. She was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church, Rebekah Esther Lodge #358, Myrtle Rebekah Lodge #28, Ladies Encampment Auxiliary Reno #32, the Ladies Association Patriarchs Militant of Central Kansas #21, the Department Association of L.A.P.M. of Kansas, the Starlight Unit EHU, and was a charter member of the Women of The Moose #1371, all of Hutchinson.
Betty married Earl H. Carey on Oct. 1, 1950, in Hutchinson. He died July 2, 1993. Survivors include: three sons, Rex Gaskill of St. Paul, Minn., Michael R. Carey and his wife Beverly of Cumberland, RI, and John S. "Jack" Delmar and his wife Lynne of Hamilton, Ohio; a brother, Buddy L. Kootz and his wife Maggie of Silver City, NM; a sister, Pat Clegg of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Gerald Kootz.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at Grace Episcopal Church in Hutchinson, with Reverend Michael P. Milliken presiding. Burial will be at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with the family to receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., all at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Rebekah Lodge rites will be held at the graveside. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Reno County for the Hospice House, Grace Episcopal Church or Rebekah Lodge #358, sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
