Betty J. (Nurse) DeMint, 93, died Nov. 13, 2014, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Aug. 2, 1921, near Medicine Lodge, the daughter of Walter S. and Ethel L. (Hunt) Nurse. She was a resident of Medicine Lodge, Hazelton, Hutchinson, moved to Norwich in 2004, and back to Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson in 2013. She worked at the ASC office in Medicine Lodge, was a financial secretary at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home and Trinity United Methodist Church, and was also a bookkeeper for DeMint Appliance Service Inc.
Betty belonged to Forest City Church near Medicine Lodge, the Methodist churches in Medicine Lodge and Hazelton, Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson and Norwich Methodist Church.
On Dec. 28, 1941, she married Virgil W. DeMint of Hazelton in Medicine Lodge. While Virgil was in the Army Air Force, they lived in Tucson, Ariz., for 3 years. He died Dec. 15, 2002.
As a youth, she belonged to Campfire Girls and 4-H. She was Mother Adviser for Rainbow Girls and a member of the Progressive Club in Hazelton, United Methodist Women, and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star; Silver Leaf Chapter 464. Betty and Virgil also volunteered for Reno County Food Bank.
Survivors include: daughters, Cheryl Gosch and husband Jay of Norwich, and Jan Wirtz and husband Bill of St. Louis, Mo.; grandson, Justin Gosch and wife Tammy of Norwich; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Jace, Tanner and Brenna Gosch, all of Norwich; a sister, Carol Sue Vester and husband Richard of Hutchinson; and three nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Marvin and Jack Nurse.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at Norwich United Methodist Church, 623 East Burns, Norwich, with the Revs. Bernard McFarthing, Cathy Holly, and Jim Rhaesa officiating. Family burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hazelton. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
