Betty Rose Shuler, 82, died peacefully March 25, 2012, at her home. She was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Bushton, Kan., the daughter of George R. and Hanna (Schlusiger) Heiken.
Betty Rose graduated from Holyrood High School in 1948 and started the Grace Hospital Nursing Program in Hutchinson. She married Gilbert A. Shuler "JR," on Jan. 23, 1949, in Bushton, Kan. He died July 7, 2010. Betty Rose was a homemaker, a longtime bus driver for USD 309, worked for Berridge's IGA, and was the maker of Shuler's Peanut Brittle. She was a member of Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: four children, Max C. Shuler and wife Irmtraud of Hutchinson, DiAnn M. Bussard and husband Max of Hutchinson, Mark S. Shuler of Independence, and Ernest E. Shuler of Hutchinson; a sister, Allene Hogan and husband LeRoy of Holyrood; two brothers, Harvey Heiken and wife Mary of Bartlesville, Okla., Edward Heiken and wife Marjorie of Blaine, Wash.; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Shuler; and a great-granddaughter, Kayla Gibbs.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church, with Pastor Nancy Proffitt presiding. Friends may call Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson. Memorials may be made to the Mitchell Cemetery Association or Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church, in care of the mortuary.
