Obituary

Billy J. Smith, 89, died Jan. 21, 2010, at his home, Hutchinson.

He was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Hutchinson, to Samuel C. and Emma Dale Smith. He attended schools in Wichita. A longtime Hutchinson resident, he was a machinist with Cessna Fluid Power and retired from Eaton Corporation after 30 years.

He belonged to the First Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was discharged in 1949, after the Air Corps became the U.S. Air Force. He served as a tail gunner on a bomber.

On June 23, 1940, he married Maxine Marie Harrison in Hutchinson. She died March 30, 1999.

Survivors include: a daughter, Sharon Marciano and her husband Fred, Hutchinson; a brother, Ben Smith, Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Betty Hettrick, Sun City West, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Jason Marciano and wife Kim, Whitewater, Ks., and Mark Marciano and wife Genevieve, South Hutchinson; and five great-grandchildren, Brayden, Taryn, Faith, Grace and Mersadies Marciano.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday Jan. 25, 2010, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Katrina Palan presiding. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with military graveside rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard from McConnell AFB.
