Boyd L. Rostine, 95, died July 18, 2015, at his home. He was born Aug. 11, 1919, in McPherson, to William E. and Astrid (Akerson) Rostine.
He moved to Hutchinson with his parents in 1928, where he resided most of his life. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1937, Hutchinson Junior College in 1939, and Kansas State College School of Engineering in 1942. He was a registered professional engineer. Boyd worked for Remington Arms Co. as a process engineer and served as a Lieutenant JG in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received an aircraft pilot's license in 1940, and owned his own plane until 2005. He returned to Hutchinson in 1946 after being discharged from the Navy. He went into business with his father and brother at Hutchinson Concrete Co. After their deaths and until his retirement he continued in the business with his son, Boyd D. Rostine. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Kansas Concrete Masonry Association and the American Legion.
He married June Davis on Feb. 2, 1941. They later divorced. He then married Lavera Umbach Sawyer on May 5, 1965. She died on April 25, 1998. Survivors include: three sons, Boyd D. Rostine (Janice Tuxhorn) of South Hutchinson, Stephen Rostine (Tom Burke) of Studio City, Calif., James Rostine and wife Rose Ann of Prescott, Ariz.; stepson, William (Kep) Sawyer of Azle, Texas; stepdaughter-in-law, Sharon Sawyer of Richardson, Texas; brother-in-law, Warren Schmitt of Hutchinson; three grandchildren, Megan Baughman of Hutchinson, Ryan Rostine (Leigh-Michil) of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Jessica Baumgardner of Dayton, Ohio; seven great-grandchildren; a great great-grandchild; two step grandchildren; a step great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ethelyn Rostine Van Buren and husband Lee Van Buren, Phyllis Rostine Schmitt; brother, William R. Rostine and wife Virginia; and a grandson, Jonathan Rostine.
Private family service will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today until service time. Memorials may be made to donor's choice, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
