Obituary

Calvert E. Sims, 91, passed away May 23, 2008, at his home, South Hutchinson.

He was born Nov. 15, 1916, in Hutchinson, to Claude E. and Alice Hinman Sims and lived through high school in Coldwater, Ks. He soon joined the CCC, and worked in Kansas and Minnesota before entering the Navy in 1937, serving on the USS Reid in the Pacific. He served also in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945.

He married Pauline Steiner July 1, 1943, in Louisville, Ky., and they returned to Kansas to raise their children, settling first in Greenwood County, and then moving to Hutchinson in 1956. They owned the Sims Motel for 20 years, and Calvert also retired from Cessna. Calvert volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Hospice, and managed the Reno County Food Bank for a number of years.

Calvert was a Charter Member of Faith United Methodist Church. He loved to visit his family all over the country, do yardwork, handyman chores, and spending time with his friends out for breakfast.

He is survived by sons Michael and his wife Eadie, and Stephen, of Hutchinson; daughters, Marcia Gaines of Lenexa, and Marilyn Fishel of Tybee Island, Georgia; a sister, Mrs. Rosemary Pritchard, of Littleton, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, Eric Sims, Robyn Sims, Laurel Bogner and husband, Andy, Anastasia Sims, Kathy and Robert Rogge, Alison and Rusty Trimble, Adam and Joey Gaines, Clara and Tom Fishel-Stephenson, Abigail and Don Diederich, and Jane Fishel; and 13 great-grandchildren. We shall miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Eric, who was killed in battle in World War II.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Ron Kite presiding. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, all at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Interment will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.
