Charles A. "Art" Gibson, 88, of Hutchinson, died Dec. 12, 2008 at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson.
He was born Jan. 30, 1920, in Winchester, the son of Perry F. and Catherine DuBois Gibson. He was a 1938 graduate of Ellis High School. He then received his bachelor of arts in education in 1947 from Wichita University. In 1951 he received his masters of arts in education administration from Colorado State College of Education, Greeley.
He was a retired teacher, coach and school administrator. He taught, coached and was the principal at Kinsley High School. He was also a superintendent of schools in Plains, Burlington, Mulvane and Inman. Later he was an elementary principal at Junction City.
A World War II Army veteran serving from 1942-46, he was a captain of the artillery division.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Lions Club, American Legion, Kiwanis, Plains Masonic Lodge No. 367, an honorary member of the FFA, Master Builder member of Kansas State Teachers Association in 1954 and was a life member of the NEA.
On Sept. 12, 1941, he married Bertie M. Bunton in Valley Center. She survives. Other survivors include: a son, Steve and wife Alice, South Hutchinson; two daughters, Trudy Doll, Clearwater, and Kathy Kaufman and husband Don, Hutchinson; nine grandchildren, Stephen Gibson, Jessa Murphy, Lance Doll, Trisha Clevenger, Luke Doll, Landon Doll, Drew Kaufman, Kami Yates and Skyler Kaufman; and five great grandchildren, Allison and Madison Clevenger, Colton Doll, Timmy Yates and Mackenzie Chaline.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Francis Marion Gibson; a sister, Olwyn Lee Picking; and a son-in-law, Lon Doll.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Kechi Cemetery, Kechi. Memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, with Pastor Ron Kite presiding. Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family to receive friends 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary.
Memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Church or the Hutchinson Kiwanis Club in care of the mortuary.
