Obituary

Charles Thomas McCoy, M.D., 93, died Oct. 9, 2009, at Promise Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 2, 1916, at home in Partridge, to William Ross and Mary Etta Friend McCoy. His mother was a schoolteacher and his father a farmer. He was of Scotch, Irish, and German ancestry.

He had a total of 20 years of schooling, plus four years of resident training. He graduated from Partridge Rural High School in 1934, attended Kansas State Teacher's College, Emporia, from 1934 to 1937, graduated from Kansas University Medical School in 1941, interned at Wesley Hospital, Wichita, from 1941, to 1942. He was the superintendent at Sedgwick County Hospital from 1946 to 1947. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine in ophthalmology from 1951 to 1952, and was a resident surgeon in ophthalmology at Kansas City General Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., from 1952 to 1954. He became board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1957. A lifetime Reno County resident, he was a physician and surgeon in general practice in Kingman from 1947 to 1951. He was a practicing ophthalmologist in Hutchinson from 1954 to 2001. He was the Reno County coroner from 1999 to 2003. He was on the attending staffs at Grace, St. Elizabeth's and Hutchinson Hospitals.

He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, and was previously a charter member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson. He belonged to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, and was a longtime member of the Hutchinson Rotary Club. He was elected a member of the Nickerson USD 309 School Board in 1968. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Medical Corps from 1942, to 1946, including sea duty with the Fleet Air Wing 11 in the Atlantic Fleet and was discharged as Lt. Commander in 1947, in Jacksonville, Fla. His place of enlistment was Kansas City, Kansas. He started active duty at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., in December 1942.

In November 1942, he married Carmen Elizabeth McNeil of Fairfax, Mo. She died in January 1956. In June 1958, he married Ruby Alice Brown Evans of Council Grove. She died in August 1973.

Survivors include: four sons, Dr. Thomas Keith McCoy and wife Janet, Tulsa, Okla., Dr. David Ross McCoy and wife Sheila, Milwaukee, Wis., Kerry Scott McCoy and wife Susan, Clinton, Ill., and Donald Windsor "Chip" McCoy and wife Pamela, Enid, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, Adam Thomas McCoy, Karen Lee McCoy Lloyd, Alisha Fay McCoy Maly, Andrea Etta McCoy Katz, Jonathan Ross McCoy, Calvin David McCoy, Jennifer Ranee McCoy, Heather Dawn McCoy, Jeremy Alan McCoy, Ryan Christopher McCoy, and Chad Thomas McCoy; and seven great-grandchildren, Rylan Robert Maly, Emma Fay Maly, Zada Marie Maly, Owen Charles Maly, Conner James McCoy-Williams, Dahlia Etta Katz and Joshua Ryan McCoy.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday Oct. 12, 2009, at Wesley Towers Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Revs. Pat Ault-Duell and Robert B. Brooks presiding. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.

Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Cremation has taken place. Private family burial will be in Partridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Towers, in care of the funeral home.
