Charles E. McDonald passed away on July 4, 2010, at the Hospice House in Hutchinson, KS.
He was born on April 19, 1934, in Garden City, KS to Elbert "Jeff" and Lena Mae Harper McDonald. He was the oldest of three children.
After graduating from Satanta High School in 1952 he attended Kansas University. He graduated from there in May 1956. Charles returned to his hometown after graduation where he married Charlene McCoy of Dodge City. He began working for his uncle Lester at the Farmers Grain and Merchandise until 1966. It was then that he purchased the Phillips 66 and started McDonald Oil Company. He took over the family farming business in the 1960's. He was partner of Cimarron Valley Inc. of Liberal KS. In April of 1985, Charles married Anna Marciano Kauffman of Liberal KS. The couple retired in 1989 and had had homes in Arizona, Colorado and Kansas.
Charles had served on many boards and committees over his life. He was a 32 degree Mason and was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Midian Shrine Club. He served 29 years on the State Bank of Satanta board of directors. He was past president of the Satanta Chamber of Commerce, Satanta District Hospital board member, Satanta City Council board member, past president of USD #507 school board and Satanta Recreation Commission board member. Charles had served as a volunteer fireman for the city of Satanta. He served as the sexton of the Satanta Cemetery for over 35 years. Charles was one of the founding members of the Satanta Lions Club. He was treasurer of the Cancer Society of Reno County just a few years back and had volunteered at the Kansas State Fair. Charles was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, KS.
Survivors include: his wife, Anna McDonald, Hutchinson; daughter, Sally Fankhauser Kotulak and husband John, Topeka, KS; sons, Scott McDonald and wife Shirley, Satanta, KS, Mark McDonald and wife Debby, Prairie Village, KS; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Jeanette Taton of Denver, Colo. and Joyce Hedden and husband Mike of Colleyville, Texas; and many other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson on Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at 1 p.m. Friends may sign the book today until service Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at the Satanta United Methodist Church on Friday, July 9, 2010, at 10 a.m. Inurnment will follow at the Satanta Cemetery.
