Obituary

Charles R. "Bob" Smith, 89, died Dec. 27, 2007, at Hospice House.

He was born Nov. 27, 1918, in Ellsworth County, the son of Fred M. and Ruth E. McCall Smith. He graduated in 1937 from Brookville High School. He was a longtime Hutchinson resident, and had formerly lived at Buhler Sunshine Meadows Retirement Home. He had 21 years of service between Haven and Belmont Co-op, retiring in 1981 as assistance manager from Belmont. He sold Raleigh Products and also worked on cattle ranches in Kansas and Oklahoma, most notably the C.K. Ranch, Brookville.

He belonged to the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church and the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army for three years, being discharged as a second lieutenant.

On Aug. 16, 1941, he married Shirley Caroline Annis in Salina. She died April 2, 2004.

Survivors include: two sons, Douglas and wife, Terri, Haysville, and Steven and wife, Cassie, South Hutchinson; a daughter, Janice Smith, Wichita; three grandchildren, Tracy Smith, Haysville, Jay Smith, Hutchinson, and Amy Smith, South Hutchinson; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ernest Lindquist; and two brothers, Harlan Wesley and Eugene.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2007, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Alan D. Stambaugh presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the mortuary, with the family present from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Memorials may be sent to the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church or Buhler Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, both in care of the mortuary.
