Charles E. Wallace, 86, died Feb. 8, 2009, at Promise Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson.
He was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Great Bend, the son of Clyde and Margaret King Wallace. He graduated in 1939 from Alexander High School.
He had been the Rush County clerk, La Crosse, until 1967, and then was an accountant for Bartlett, Settle, and Edgerle Accounting from 1968 until retiring in 1987. Most recently he had been an assistant funeral director for Elliott Mortuary.
He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church, the Duo Sunday School Class at Trinity, American Legion Post No. 68, Sons of the American Legion SQDN No. 68, the 40 et 8 La Sociate, all at Hutchinson, Veterans of Foreign Wars, La Crosse, A.F.& A.M. Masonic Lodge No. 99, Scottish Rite Consistory, Midian Shrine, Wichita, Reno County Shrine Club, and the Reno County Amateur Radio Association. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees serving in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign.
On April 28, 1946, he married Maxine I. Shannon in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She survives.
Other survivors include: two granddaughters, Tanya Honderick, and Tara Smith and husband Tad, Shawnee; great-granddaughter, Tyler Delia Smith, Shawnee; and a nephew, Dr. Darryl Wallace and wife Sally, Fairway; niece Carol Ward and husband Harold, Shellknob, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Linda S. Honderick and husband John; brother, Clyde L. Wallace, Jr.; and sisters, Kathryn Wolfe and an infant, Carmaline Wallace.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Pat Ault-Duell presiding. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in La Crosse City Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Shriners Hospitals Children, or the Central Prairie Honor Flight (an honors flight program for World War II, Korean and Vietnam veterans.
