Obituary

Cheryl Charlene Hemphill, 65, passed away at home in Nickerson on June 21, 2026. She was born in Hutchinson on September 5, 1960, to Kenneth and Carroll (Alexander) King, Sr.

On September 16, 1977, Cheryl married Michael D. Hemphill. They shared 48 years of marriage.

Cheryl had tremendous love in her heart. Her family meant the most to her. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for them. When not spending time with family, Cheryl enjoyed spending time doing arts and crafts. From painting to sewing to crocheting, her time spent doing those activities for herself and family brought her great peace and joy. And her cooking—there’s no better way to describe it than amazing. She never let a long day stop her from keeping her family fed and cared for. Her love of cooking for others, even if she didn’t like the meal, was something she greatly enjoyed doing. “Get seconds” was said after every empty plate. Every meal as a family included, “How was your day?”

There’s so much we can say about Cheryl, but nothing would quite do her justice. For 49 years she was a wife and mother, and what she did with that time will last generations more with the lives she’s helped build. Nickerson was her home. She spent her life there and passed in the same home she helped raised her 3 kids. She was exactly where she wanted to be. Now she’s getting the rest she very much deserves. She will always be missed, but she’ll never be gone. We love you!

Cheryl is survived by her: husband; children, Joey (Jessica) Hemphill, Nicholas “Nick” (Victoria) Hemphill, all of Hutchinson, and Stacy Henderson of Wichita; grandchildren, Ethan Hemphill, Kaylynn (Michael) Brooks, Syrus Hemphill, Scarlett Hemphill, Caydence Hemphill, Lincoln Henderson and Levi Henderson; siblings, Carl King, Debbie Smethers, Karen Curtis, Janice Butcher and 6 half-siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
