Christopher A. Hildenbrand, 84, died April 9, 2006, at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born Dec. 23, 1921, in Kinsley, the son of Christopher and Fern Keith Hildenbrand. A Hutchinson resident for 21 years, he graduated from Great Bend High School in 1940. He graduated from Yankton College, Yankton, S.D., in 1945, with a BA in Social Studies, and from Fort Hays State University with an M.A. in English in 1965. He was a retired teacher. He taught American and World History, English and Journalism, and coached football, basketball, track and cross-country. He facilitated secondary gifted students, served as a teacher and administrator in Minnesota and South Dakota. He taught at Kinsley, Ellinwood, Kingman, and Greeley, Colo., high schools, and High Plains and Reno County Educational Co-ops, Dodge City, Lamar, Garden City and Colby Community Colleges. He also worked for Great Bend Daily Tribune, Great American Life Insurance, Financial Industrial Fund and as an independent professional photographer.
He belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; past high priest of the Royal Arch Masons; past commander of St. Omar Commandery; served on Great Bend Library Board; deacon of United Church of Christ; former chairman of the Sports Committee of Great Bend Chamber of Commerce; past president of the Great Bend Junior Chamber of Commerce. In 1957, he was awarded Outstanding Young Man of the Year by Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Hutchinson Downtown Kiwanis Club, United Methodist Men, Seeker's Sunday School Class and was a Sunday School teacher, all of the church.
In 1944, he married Mary Duba. On Feb. 25, 1968, he married Kathleen Hirsch in Wichita. She survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Star Celeste Hildebrand, Wichita.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepmother, Blanche Hildenbrand.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nick Warner presiding. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Cremation will take place. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
