Clara Belle Haworth, age 94, died January 11, 2007, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born near Arlington, October 1, 1912, to S.P. and Emma Dillard Burling. She attended High Point one-room country grade school, Arlington High School and Emporia Teachers College.
On June 6, 1937, Clara Belle married Millard Haworth, and they started farming in the Arlington area. He died August 21, 1947. For several years, Clara Belle worked at the Citizens State Bank, in Arlington. On January 28, 1951, she married Howard Haworth, brother of her first husband and returned to the farm where they farmed together for 44 years, until his death May 5, 1995.
Clara Belle loved the role of farm wife and homemaker. She gardened and canned and checked cows, took meals to the field and drove a grain truck on occasion. She also made time to sew nearly all her daughter's clothes. Clothing made with love and worn with pride. In retirement Clara Belle much enjoyed hearing the news from friends still working the land. She was truly a "farmer's wife" in her heart.
Clara Belle also had a special interest in saving family heirlooms and history. She left a priceless bit of personal history, having kept a continuous diary for over 65 years.
Clara Belle was a lifelong member of the Arlington Methodist Church and was active in the Women's Society in earlier years.
She was preceded in death by all of her siblings, brothers, Walter and Robert Burling and sisters Emma Stickley, Mattie Nichols and Tiny Albrecht.
