Obituary

Clarice A. Mathews-Engstrom, 89, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Thorne Care Center at Wesley Towers, Hutchinson. Clarice Alberta Wolf was born on her parents' farm home southeast of Lyons near Saxman, Kan., on July 18, 1923. She was the youngest of seven children born to Lloyd and Ethel Wagerle Wolf.

She met her sweetheart, a local farmer, Robert V. Mathews, and married him on Oct. 3, 1943. They lived on the farm, where Robert was born and operated the farm until he passed away on Feb. 18, 1990. They raised their three children, Philip (Janet) of Hutchinson, Rita Reissig of Geneva, NY, and Jean Sidebottom (Carl) of Hutchinson on this farm. She was actively involved in the operation of the farm as a mother, homemaker, and truck driver during harvest, milking cows and maintaining a large flock of laying hens and selling eggs to homes and restaurants in Lyons. She remained on the farm a year after Robert's death and then moved to Hutchinson. She volunteered as a Gray Lady and Red Cross volunteer for 15 years at Lyons before moving to Hutchinson, where she became active as a volunteer at the Hutchinson Hospital ICU waiting room, the local RSVP, Reno County Food Bank and Red Cross.

She married John Engstrom on Jan. 24, 1998, but kept Mathews as a part of her last name since it was a part of her life for 46 years. She is survived by: her husband, John; her three children; four step children; six grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; brothers, Ervin, Theodore and Harold; sisters, May Lowrey, Fay Park, and Marjory Zwick. She was active in New Covenant Presbyterian Church until the last few years of her life since becoming a resident of Wesley Towers.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastors Tom Robson and Joseph S. Rychcik officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Lyons, Kan. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Wesley Towers Good Samaritan Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
