Dale Lee Ward, 85, died Nov. 19, 2014, at Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson, where he had been a resident since suffering a stroke and heart attack in May of this year. He was born Feb. 13, 1929, in Downs, to Violet (nee Violetta Ellen Hoverman) and William Eugene Ward Sr.
He was the first of seven siblings. He was a resident of Hutchinson for nearly all of his life. He attended Sherman High School in Hutchinson. At age 17, he went to work for Western Electric, Inc., where he worked until he retired 37 years later.
He and Ann (nee Ursula Ann Schonlau) were married on May 18, 1949, in Ann's home town of Kingman. They recently marked their 65th wedding anniversary.
In 1960, Ann and Dale purchased a lot in the sand hills north of Hutchinson, where they built a house that would be their home from then on. At Western Electric, Dale installed telephone switching equipment and long distance communications equipment, including microwave transmission systems, primarily for The Bell System.
He was a lifelong technologist. He was also a serial hobbyist: enjoying painting, drawing, stamp collecting, slot car racing, astronomy, model-building, prospecting, photography, cross-stitch, electronics, computing and more. He was a member of AFL-CIO, CWA, and Telephone Pioneers of America.
He is survived by: his wife, Ann; his siblings, Janice Elaine Alonge, Larry Dean Ward, John Leroy Ward, Dwight Ward, and Violet Ellen Smith; his children, Robert Lee Ward, Kenneth Casey Ward, James Mace Ward; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Dale was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, Leon Curtis Ward.
Cremation has taken place and memorial service arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date by Elliott Mortuary and Crematory.
Dale Ward's family will host an informal reception 2:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015, in the Cosmosphere banquet room for friends and acquaintances who would like to express their condolences for the loss of Mr. Ward, who died Nov. 19, 2014, and renew old acquaintances. The extended family will gather afterwards to share pictures, stories and supper.
