Darrell Leon Johnson, 67, died Thursday, November 4, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born January 12, 1954, in Childress, TX, to Leon and Mellissa Mae (Stroud) Johnson.
As owner and operator of Spears Gun Shop, he was a self-employed gunsmith, and tool and die maker. Darrell was also a builder of release triggers for professional and amateur trap, skeet, and sporting clay shooters throughout the United States and several other countries.
Darrell served in the New Mexico and Kansas Army National Guard units. He was a member of the Devil's Ditch Renegade Muzzle Loading Club and Single Action Shooting Society. His interests and hobbies included: DDR rendezvous, car renovation and enthusiast, gun restoration and repair, target shooting, being an aviation enthusiast and glider pilot, history, and Bible study.
On May 11, 1985, Darrell married his wife of 36 years, Carolyn Rita Mooney, in Hutchinson. She survives.
Also surviving are: son, Luke of Abbyville; siblings, Robert Hill of Houston, TX, and Trudy Brannon and husband Cotton of Ponca City, OK; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; infant daughter, Baby Angel; and sister, Linda Jackson.
A private service for Darrell will be held at Abbyville Community Church. Burial with military honors conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The service will be recorded, then inserted into his obituary on the Elliott Mortuary website beginning Tuesday, November 9, 2021.
Friends may sign his book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Abbyville Community Church, Rejoice Fellowship Church of Abbyville, or Cancer Council of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
