Obituary

Darwin 'Gene' Warkentin, 85, of Hutchinson, died Tuesday, January 2, 2019, at Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, Buhler. He was born November 9, 1933, in Dalhart, TX, the son of Albert H. and Thelma L. (Froese) Warkentin.

Gene graduated from Buhler High School and worked for over 40 years in maintenance and as a truck driver for Cal-Maine Foods. He loved hunting, fishing, and traveling, especially to Colorado. Gene was a member of Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church, Inman.

On March 21, 1954, he married Elizabeth D. 'Betty' Wiens in Inman. She survives. Other survivors include: daughters, Sandy Worthy, Marana, AZ, Teresa England (Joe), Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Diasio, Hutchinson, Betty Krehbiel (Larry), Elyria; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Steve.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at Elliott Chapel. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
