David Steven Martinez, 62, went to rest peacefully with our Lord Jan. 27, 2011, at Harry Hynes Hospice at Via Christi Hospital on the St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Aug. 3, 1948, in Hutchinson, to Jim P. and Santos B. Martinez.
He graduated in 1966 from Hutchinson High School. He was the owner and operator of Custom Metal and Design, Hutchinson.
He belonged to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson, the Kansas/Oklahoma Golden Gloves, currently serving as the franchise holder and National Time Keeper, and had served as past president. He served on the Cinco de Mayo Committee as a member and past chairman, was the Class of 1966 Reunion Committee Chairperson. He belonged and served on numerous civic and community organizations. He was Santa Claus wherever he was needed across town, distributing candy, gifts and smiles.
On July 3, 1982, he married Anna Marie Martinez in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include: three sons, David and Emilio, both of Hutchinson, and Antonio, Wichita; three brothers, Ed, Wichita, Julian, Alexandria, Va., and Ernie, Dallas; five sisters, Ruby Curiel, Hutchinson, Stella Bribiesca, Anaheim, Calif., Connie Ybarra, Hutchinson, Cynthia Martinez, Wichita, and Mary Graham, Hutchinson; longtime close friend/sister, Pam Hornbeck; a granddaughter, Alivea Martinez; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Michael; and a sister, Maria Louisa Martinez.
Parish rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at the church, with Father Brian Nelson presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson.
Memorials may be sent to the Kansas/Oklahoma Golden Gloves David S. Martinez Scholarship Fund, or to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, in care of the mortuary.
