Obituary

David Burchard Merwin, 98, passed away at Golden Living Center in Branson, Mo., on Feb. 20, 2012. He was born Feb. 21, 1913, to Elmer Levi and Mary Emily (Bailey) Merwin in Kinsley, Kansas.

In Feb. 1940, he married Viola Rose Korte of Kinsley. To this union, three daughters were born. Viola passed away in 1956. In 1957, he married Mildred Fahlsing of Kinsley. She passed away in 2003.

He was a long-time resident of Kinsley and worked at the Kinsley Co-op until his retirement in 1985. At that time, he and his wife moved to South Hutchinson, Kansas, where he lived until 2007, and then moved to Branson, Mo. He enjoyed gardening and was especially known for his delicious tomatoes. He was also a member of the Hutchinson Silver Topper's bowling team for many years, bowling on two teams until age 94. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Hutchinson, Kansas. He will be remembered for his generosity and kindness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and three sisters; and one daughter, Mary Ann Katz. Survivors include: daughters, Carol Stallings and husband Tom, Branson, Mo., and Cindy Graber and husband Gene, Americus, Kansas; three grandchildren, Bryan Stallings of Branson, Mo., Dallas Katz, Bucklin, Kansas, Jennifer Graber, Dodge City, Kansas; and nine great-grandchildren; plus many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with Rev. Jim Bell presiding. A memorial book will be available to sign on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Hutchinson or First Christian Church of Kinsley, Kansas, sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
