David F. Wynn, 92, of Matthews, NC, passed away June 10, 2018. He was born November 6, 1925, in Harpster, Ohio, the son of the late Rev. Ivan C. Wynn and Jane Ruth (Taylor) Wynn.
David served in the Coast Guard during WWII and graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in sociology. His career involved working at various Boys Clubs in northwestern Ohio, Assistant Director of the Atlanta, GA, Boys Club, Director of the Shadyside Boys Club, Pittsburgh, PA, and the Boys Clubs of America national headquarters staff in New York.
David created many initiatives to expand BCA's programs into areas of health, music, art, and leadership development. He visited clubs all over the U.S. to improve programs and service to members and staff. David successfully obtained federal multi-year grants to support implementation of these vital programs across the country.
In 1994, David was inducted into Sylvania Schools Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was honored as a Master Mentor in the Boys and Girls Clubs of America for his contributions to the BCA movement and mission. During his career David also received awards from the National Assoc. of Keystone Clubs, a bronze Keystone Award, the Herman Prescott Award, and recognition from the Department of Health and Human Services.
David was kind, sincere, honest and true to his principals, with a love of nature and the outdoors. He believed in treating people with respect, always giving his best to any task. David was a man of many talents who was at home in a boardroom, at a conference speaking, writing grants, working in his shop creating fishing lures or stained glass, or in the garden. He believed in high performance standards for himself, family, employees, organizations and club participants. This included fair treatment of others, hard work, truthfulness without slander or jest, the importance of recreation, nature and the outdoors to build character, the unique worth of each individual to improve society, as well as faith in a higher purpose and power. He instilled these values with unconditional love and positive encouragement.
In August, 1947, David married Mildred J. Gogel in Toledo, OH. Together they raised four children in Westchester County, NY, and were active in civic affairs, Greenburgh schools, and St. Matthews Lutheran Church.
In 1989, he married Linda Bollon in Hartsdale, NY. They moved to his cabin on Lake Millecoquins, MI, at the Hiwatha Sportsman's Club. They spent winters in Florida, where David continued his passion as a volunteer with the Big Brothers organization and advised a local community group who started a new Boys and Girls Club in Fort Pierce, FL.
In 2000, he and Linda adopted daughter, Julia, from Guatemala. Inspired by the plight of children, Linda and David formed an adoption agency which specialized in international adoptions. They adopted daughter, Emily, also from Guatemala, in 2006.
