Obituary

Dean John Getting, 84, of Haviland, died April 22, 2022, at Kiowa County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born November 5, 1937, in Marshalltown, IA, to George G. and Charlotte S. (Harms) Getting.

Dean grew up on a farm near Wellsburg, in north central Iowa. He served in the United States Army from 1956-1958, in the Iowa National Guard from 1958-1962, and the Kansas National Guard from 1978-1982. Dean attended Friends Bible College in Haviland and Letourneau College in Longview, TX. Along with his wife, Irene, Dean served as a missionary with the Friends Church in Burundi, Africa, from 1975 to 1977. Over the course of his life, Dean worked as a school custodian, owned his own trash and tree trimming/removal service, and was a heavy equipment operator for Kiowa County. "Catman", as he was known on the CB, was a truck driver for many years hauling crude oil from wells to pipeline in southwest Kansas and the Texas panhandle, gasoline from pipeline to gas stations in southwest Missouri, and grain from Springfield, Missouri, to mill in Kansas City.

On February 28, 1960, Dean married Dorothy Irene Hogendorn, in Ackley, IA. They divorced in 1981. She died July 4, 2007. On June 2, 1982, he married Marcia Lee (Gohn) Turner, in Protection, KS. They divorced in 2014.

Dean is survived by: his children, Gary and Robin Getting of Hutchinson, David and Cheri Getting of Haviland, Kaye and Dave Hardinger of Haviland, Meleah and Jim Vandiver of Rogersville, MO; 3 stepsons; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2022 in the Haviland Community Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Memorials are suggested to Evangelical Friends Mission or Barclay College, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
