Donald J. McMurray, 90, of Hutchinson, died July 3, 2012, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Don was born Mar. 7, 1922, at Frontenac, the son of Albert E. and Hazel Armstrong McMurray. He graduated from Madison High School in 1940, and later attended night classes at Wichita State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving for 6 years during World War II. He served in both the Pacific and European theaters as an Aviation Machinist First Class. His service included a short time on the U.S.S. Cincinnati cruiser and U.S.S. Yorktown aircraft carrier. He spent part of his duty in Honolulu and Puerto Rico. A Kansan his entire life, he had lived in Olathe, Olpe, Madison, and El Dorado. He moved to Hutchinson in 1967. Don worked for Cities Service Oil Co. for 31 years, and retired as Pipeline Superintendent.

After retirement, he worked for several years as manager of the gate ticket office for the Kansas State Fair. He also volunteered as a van driver for American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68, which he was a member, in transporting veterans to doctor appointments at the V.A. Hospital in Wichita.

On Nov. 18, 1943, he married Lorene L. Bradley in Olathe. They were married 66 years, until her death on Sept. 2, 2009. Survivors include: a daughter, Kathy Voth and her husband Lawrence, Hutchinson; a brother, Donald H. Armstrong, Neodesha; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Douglas "Doug" McMurray on Nov. 23, 2004; and a brother, Albert E. McMurray Jr.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012, at Elliott Mortuary, with Chaplain Bob Phipps presiding. Don will be in state from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House or Hutchinson Animal Shelter, both sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N.
