Donald Lee Vielbig passed away June 16, 2011 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born July 28, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri to Genevea and Joseph Vielbig.
He was a member of Wheatland Baptist Church, McPherson. Don was an Army veteran, serving from April 1950 to April 1953. He married Verna Dodson on November 19, 1954. She survives.
He is also survived by his three children and their spouses: Donald Lee, Jr. and Shawn, Apple Valley, Ohio, Janice Lynne and Jay Richard Puckett, Louisburg, Kansas and Sheryl Elaine and Erin Patrick, Hutchinson, Kansas.
Don has ten grandchildren: Jeremy Richard Puckett and his wife Tabitha and their three sons, Jacob Lee, Noah Richard and Elijah Joseph of Crestview, Florida; Jason Lee and his wife, Jennie and their daughter Tauren Rae of Overland Park, Kansas; Joel Michael and his daughter Madaline of Fort Bragg, South Carolina; JoLynne Vielbig, Kansas City, Missouri; William Christopher Vielbig, Overland Park, Kansas; Kevin Wayne Patrick, Manhattan, Kansas; Megan Kay Patrick, Hutchinson; Laura Beth Patrick, Hutchinson; Jamie Lynne Patrick, Hutchinson; and Kyle Joseph Patrick, Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Theodore Vielbig and a sister, Barbara Osbone.
Don was an avid sports fan - He loved all sports, but participated mostly in baseball and basketball in his younger years. He pitched baseball for his church team, Olivet Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas and played basketball with his buddies whenever he could. He particularly loved watching his grandchildren play baseball, basketball and volleyball games throughout their childhood. Don truly loved the Lord, and raised his children under Godly guidelines feeling the necessity of always "leading the way by example".
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 20, 2011 at Wheatland Baptist Church, McPherson. Friends may call from 6-8 Sunday at Wheatland Baptist Church. Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens in Shawnee, Kansas. Memorial gifts may be given to Wheatland Baptist Building Fund in care of Elliott Mortuary.
