Donna Mae Smith Byer, 91, died Saturday, March 10, 2012. She was born in Hutchinson, June 13, 1920, the daughter of Jesse and Nellie Shoberg Mackey.
She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and Adela Hale Business College, was member of Zion Lutheran Church, and had worked at Central State bank and Kansas Oxygen for a combined 33 years. Donna was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star, Silver Leaf Chapter #464.
On November 20, 1946, she married Herman "Buss" Smith. He died October 5, 1967. Then on February 7, 1976, she married Al Byer. He died July 31, 1979.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn and her husband Kenny Moody, Elwood, Illinois, and Mary Jean Papka, Spearfish, South Dakota; a brother, Dee Mackey and his wife Letha, Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Melinda Spreitzer and husband Terry, Brenda Wills, Carol Novak, Dan Papka; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan Spreitzer, Rachel Spreitzer, Jessica Wills, Jason Wills, Patrick Novak, Krysta Novak, Jacob Papka; nieces, Deetta Mackey, Donna Jean Stewart, and other niece and nephews; and special friends, Larry and Jeane Jordan. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son-in-law, Orval Papka, grandson, Ron Papka, two brothers, Charles and Gay Mackey, and two sisters, Thelma Buskirk and Betty Kincaid.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday March 13, 2012, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastors Henry J. Harman and Robert Albin officiating. Order of Eastern Star rites will be conducted by Silver Leaf Chapter #464. Burial will be in Penwell Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Monday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.
