Obituary

Donnie L. Ahrens, 76, died April 23, 2012, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.

He was born Jan. 20, 1936, in Hugoton, the son of V. Loraine (Seaman) Ahrens.

He attended Hutchinson schools, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1955. He attended Hutchinson Community College and the University of Texas at El Paso.

He married Shirley M. Lemen in Hutchinson on July 8, 1956. Serving in the United States Army for 23 years, he retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer W-4. During his years of service, he completed two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded many military awards and decorations during his years of serving our country, including three bronze stars. After retirement from the military, he moved back to Hutchinson and pursued a career in real estate. He was the owner and managing broker of Ahrens-Messing Real Estate, retiring in 2000. Donnie was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He was a former member of the Board of Directors, Ft. Clayton, Panama Canal, the Board of Directors of the Four Winds Club, Washington, D.C., the Board of Directors of the Ft. Bliss Rod and Gun Club, Ft. Bliss, Texas, and the Board of Directors of the Board of Realtors. He was a current member of the 11th Armored Calvary, Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia, Military Officers Association and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include: his wife of 55 years, Shirley Ahrens of Hutchinson; two daughters, Trudy Mesa and Sheri (Keith) Kienzle, both of Hutchinson; mother, V. Loraine Ahrens of Hutchinson; two brothers, Bill (Rita) Quillen of Nickerson and Gerald Ahrens of Hutchinson; sister, Judi (Johnnie) McFall of Hutchinson; grandson, Gregory Mesa of Wichita; granddaughter, Nicole Mesa of Hutchinson; and three great-grandchildren, Kali, Ethan and Jaydie, all of Hutchinson. Donnie was preceded in death by his stepfather, Delmer Ahrens; and his sister, Patty Badagliacco.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary.
