Doris Charlene Fortune, 83, died Oct. 9, 2010, at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in Wichita.
She was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Alexander, in the last sod house in Rush County, to William and Bertha Filbert Schwartzkopf.
She graduated in 1945 from Brownell High School, Brownell, Ks. She was a retired dental assistant of 18 years for Dr. Stanley Bettin, Lyons. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Silver Leaf Chapter #464 Order of Eastern Star. She loved working in her yard and tending to her flowers. She was a State Fair Promenader Square Dancer and an avid KU Basketball fan.
On May 2, 1989, she married Elo Zane "Easy" Fortune in Lyons. He died April 2, 2009.
Survivors include: a son, Rodney Adkinson and wife Donna, Hutchinson; a daughter, Penny Lesley and husband Jon, Inman; stepchildren, Jay Fortune and wife Linda, Littleton, Colo., Jerry Fortune, Golden, Colo., and June Davis, Crystal River, Fla.; a brother, Alfred Schwartzkopf and wife Kay, Ness City, Ks.; two grandchildren; four step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Alvin Schwartzkopf; and a twin sister, Dorothy (Weeks) Sherwin.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Rev. Mark Conard officiating. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson.
