Doris B. Lestishen, 89, died December 23, 2015, at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. She was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Wichita, to H.O. and Henrietta (Klaren) Byers.
The former bookkeeper for Morton Interiors, Doris was the office manager at the Hutchinson Town Club until her retirement at age 70. Doris was a longtime member of the Hutchinson community. Her special interests included service, music, family, her faith, genealogy, and gardening. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for fifty-seven years and was instrumental in creating the Torchbearer Beta chapter. Her love of music included ringing English handbells. She was a longstanding member of Trinity United Methodist Church and played in the Tower Bells Choir for nearly 40 years.
She also directed the Chime Choir at Mennonite Fellowship Communities in South Hutchinson for five years.
Doris was a very involved citizen, active in the community throughout her more than 60 years as a resident of Hutchinson. Doris found great fulfillment in the many volunteer roles she filled.
Through the years these roles included Sunday school offices, working as an involved parent in the schools, leading Scout troops, serving Meals on Wheels, working the election polls and many other areas.
On Feb. 23, 1947, she married John Lestishen. He died July 18, 1978. Survivors include: son, Mike Lestishen and wife Lori of Lone Tree, Colo.; daughters, Nancy Lestishen of Seattle Wash., Mary Peterson and husband Trent of Houston, Texas, Janet Hummell and husband Steve of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Jacob Lestishen, Jenae Aber (Ian), Sarah Peterson, Natalie Hummell, and Cate Hummell; and a sister, Kay Bell of Westminster, Colo. She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband; brother, Don Byers; and a sister, Betty Strickland.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, with Pastor Michael McGuire presiding. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
