Obituary

Doris J. Sloan, 90, of Hutchinson, died Nov. 2, 2012, at Thorne Care Center in Hutchinson. Doris was born Oct. 24, 1922, at Conway, in McPherson County, the daughter of Milo and Minnie Burton Sitts. Doris moved with her family to near Rago when she was in high school and she graduated from Kingman High School.
Doris married Wilbur Sloan on June 1, 1941, at Rago and they raised Holstein cows and farmed south of Cleveland until moving to Hutchinson in the early 1960s.

She worked at Calvert's Department Store in Kingman as a sales clerk and later, after moving to Hutchinson, she worked at Calhoun's Department Store and later in the dining room at Wesley Towers. Doris was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Phi Beta Psi, a cancer awareness sorority.

Survivors include: her husband of 71 years, Wilbur, of the home; three sons, Dan Sloan and wife Marilyn, Diamondhead, MS., Dave Sloan, Eaton, Colo., and James Sloan and wife Sandy, Willow Springs, Mo.; a brother, Ted Sitts, Holly, Colo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Wilbur Sitts, and two sisters, Bernadine Sitts and Evelyn Layman.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with Pastor Jeanine I. Rishel presiding. Committal service will be at 3:30 p.m. in Cleveland Cemetery, south of Kingman. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family greeting friends Monday, from 7 to 8 p.m., all at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, or Youthville, sent in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 North Main, Hutchinson, Kansas, 67501.
