Dorothy Ruth (Short) Mackey, 97, beloved wife of the late Bill Mackey and dear mother of Michael, died Feb. 8, 2014, in Hester Care at Wesley Towers, Hutchinson. The eldest of three children, she was born April 5, 1916, in Chicago, to Charles Edward Short and Dorothy Green Short and was raised in Hutchinson. She is survived by her son, Michael C. and wife Nancy of Montreal, and by four grandchildren, David of Montreal, Linda of Paris, France, Christopher of Colorado Springs, and Alastair Kyle of Vancouver; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Fraser Kyle of Montreal; her brother, Charles; and her sister, Marion Warehime. Graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1934, she married her classmate William Boyd (Bill) Mackey May 13, 1939, at her parent's home on East 15th in Hutchinson. Bill died in Hutchinson Aug. 8, 1999. Dorothy was a devoted homemaker her entire married life, first in Kansas City, Kan. from 1939 to 1977, and in her hometown of Hutchinson, thereafter, following Bill's retirement from Phillips Petroleum Company. She and Bill were dedicated travelers. They first spent a year in Mexico City where Bill was working for Phillips, then later in their camper, visiting probably every county in the state of Kansas with their camping group the Tumbleweeds, all 49 land-accessible states as well as all 10 Canadian provinces; taking innumerable cruises; and touring the UK including England, Scotland, and Ireland. She attended K-State and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. An active member of the DAR, Eastern Star, the Masonic High 12, the Women of the Moose, the Prosperity Extension Homemakers Unit, the Huguenot Society of Kansas and Park Place Christian Church for many years as well as Christian Women's Fellowship and Younger Longer. She moved to Wesley Towers three years after Bill's death, maintaining an active social life all the while. Dorothy will be much missed by all her family who especially enjoyed visiting her in Kansas over many years, as well as in Canada, where she traveled to regularly.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Park Place Christian Church, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery presiding. Interment will follow immediately thereafter at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Towers, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
