Douglas H. “Doug” King, 76, of Hutchinson, died June 2, 2026, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born June 29, 1949, in Independence, Kansas, to Hershel and Arlene (Burns) King.
Doug graduated from Nickerson High School. He took some college classes at Hutchinson Community College. In September of 1971, Doug joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years as a Sergeant. He was highly experienced and earned the title of Master Crew Chief in 1973 for his leadership role.
On March 7, 1970, he married Madeline “Kay” Hamby. Though their union eventually ended, they shared 25 years of marriage and remained friends. She survives.
Doug worked as a mechanic who enjoyed repairing and restoring vehicles. He was an independent truck driver for over 25 years. He retired in 1991 after experiencing health issues. Doug loved to attend the yearly Downtown Hutch Rod Run with his son.
He overcame many challenges in his life and developed a profound resilience and independence. Even with physical limitations, Doug enjoyed cooking and loved baking cinnamon rolls for his grandchildren.
Doug is survived by: son, Chad (Stephanie) King; sister, Pam (Dan) Mathis; grandchildren, Zaden King and Chanel Rodriguez, all of Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Danny Dean King.
Friends may call Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with family present 3 to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Military Honors will be conducted by McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard. Friends may sign his book 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to KS4Vets, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main St. Hutchinson, KS 67501.
