E. Bert Martin Jr., 90, died Dec. 30, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born June 6, 1917, in Pueblo, Colo., the son of E. Bert Martin Sr. and Ethel Frame Martin. He graduated from Englewood Colorado High School and attended Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., and Taylor Instrument School, Rochester, N.Y. He was a resident of California for 60 years. Later he and his wife moved to Hutchinson in 2001, living at Elm Grove from 2001 to 2005, then Dillon Living Center 2006-2007. He worked for Douglas Aircraft Co., Santa Monica, Calif., Hamilton Air Force Base in San Rafael, Calif., Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, Calif., and then worked for Spreckles Sugar Beet Co., Woodland, Salinas, Mendota and Manteca, Calif., retiring as chief electrician in 1979 after 33 years with the company. After his retirement he moved to Clear Creek, Calif., for 22 years and served as fire chief in Clear Creek for four years.
He was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and was active in the church wherever he lived. He was a 60-year member and Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 501, A.F.&A.M., Westwood, Calif., Scottish Rite and Ben Ali Shrine of Sacramento, Calif., and Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star Lodge, Woodland, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
On July 13, 1940, he married Ila Fern Pittman at Raton, N.M. She survives.
Other survivors include: a brother, Gerald Martin and his family, Lopez Island, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Delpha Whale, Hutchinson; and a niece, Shanna Soukup and husband Herb, Hutchinson.
The family has selected cremation, with no local services. A private family graveside service will be held in Stamford, Neb., at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Shriners Children's Hospital in care of Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.
