Obituary

Earl Lee Welch, 90, died June 5, 2011, at Elm Grove Estates, Hutchinson.

He was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Turon, to William Wesley and Alice Mae Compton Welch.

He was a resident since 1967, moving from Turon. He was a 1939 graduate from Turon High School. While in Turon he was a partsman in the farm machinery business, and after moving to Hutchinson, he worked for Scheufler (Big A) Auto Parts and later for the Plotera John Deere dealership. He was a member of First Christian Church, VFW Bob Campbell Post #1361 and the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post #68. Earl served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was stationed in various radar schools before being shipped overseas to Tinian, an island in the Marianas, where he was assigned to the 24th Bomb Squadron, 6th Bomb group, serving with the ground echelons supporting B-29 assaults.

On Aug. 23, 1941, he married Virginia Helen "Gin" Edwards in Eureka. She died Jan. 2, 2001. On May 31, 2003, he then married Wilma Perks in Hutchinson. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Greg Welch and wife Marla, Lawrence; a daughter, Karen Wingfield, and husband Ron, Hutchinson; a brother, Dale Welch, Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jerrie Kroeker and husband Steve, Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Glenna Armbrust, Hutchinson, Joel Welch and wife Cara, Washington D.C., Josh Welch and wife Jessica, Overland Park, Mark Wingfield, Mesa, Ariz., Brad Wingfield and wife Diana, Tucson, Ariz., and Timothy Wingfield, Wichita; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Orlo, Keith and Donald Welch; sisters, Reta Nestor, Iona Huff, Neva Bauman and Emmaline Lambert.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at First Christian Church, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Jim Bell officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to the church or Rivercross Hospice of Wichita, in care of the mortuary.
