Obituary

Edward Newer Johnson, 81, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026, at Hospice House in Hutchinson, Kansas, surrounded by his wife, Marjory, and their children, Todd and Kristen.

Ed was born on December 11, 1944, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the second of seven children born to Patricia (Newer) and Dan C. Johnson.

He graduated from St. Teresa High School in Hutchinson, Hutchinson Community College, and Sterling College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1968. After leaving Sterling, Ed completed the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School and served as a combat engineer on active duty until 1972, attaining the rank of Captain. He continued his military service in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1977.

Ed enjoyed a successful 40-year career in banking, beginning with American Federal Savings in Colorado before returning to Hutchinson in 1977, where he worked at Salt City Savings and Loan, First Federal Savings, and ultimately First National Bank. He held the position of Executive Vice President of Real Estate Lending until his retirement in 2012.

On June 15, 1968, Ed married Marjory Lynne McLeavy at First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson. Together, they shared more than 58 years of marriage, building a life centered on family, faith, friendship, and community.

Ed was an avid golfer, sports enthusiast, dedicated community volunteer, and, above all, a proud father and grandfather. While he accomplished much throughout his life, his greatest joy was raising his two children, to whom he devoted so much of his time and energy.

He coached T-ball, Little League baseball, basketball, and soccer, and served as a leader of Hutchinson's Boy Scout Troop 1. He organized overnight camping adventures around Reno County and at High Adventure Camp in southern Colorado. Ed also chaperoned youth group ski trips and logged countless miles driving to debate tournaments, dance lessons, tennis matches, and junior golf. He even found time to pull a sled behind the family car on snowy days.

His children, along with several of their friends, fondly remember learning to drive on the back roads of Hutchinson in the family's infamous “Silver Bullet,” a Pontiac station wagon. Always ready with a dad joke (before they were such a thing), a warm smile, or a little good-natured mischief, Ed had a special way of making the kids around him feel welcomed, included, and loved. His generous, fun-loving approach to fatherhood extended well beyond his own children, making him a positive influence on the lives of many young people.

Ed's commitment to his community was equally strong. He served as an Elder, Deacon, and Trustee at First Presbyterian Church, and on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Hutchinson. Ed also served on the Board of Trustees at The Wesley, including as Chairman during his final term, and was active in Rotary and the American Bankers Association. He volunteered as a mentor with YouthFriends and Big Brothers Big Sisters, where he was honored as Big Brother of the Year.

Ed made friends easily and kept them for a lifetime. Well-liked and respected by his colleagues, neighbors, and throughout the community, he had an easygoing warmth and sense of humor that made people of all ages feel comfortable around him. Ed will be deeply missed by the many friends whose lives were richer for knowing him.

A longtime member of Prairie Dunes Country Club, Ed's connection to the club began in 1956, when he first worked there as a young caddie. His love of golf remained a constant throughout his life.

Ed is survived by his wife, Marjory, of Hutchinson, KS; his son, Todd McLeavy Johnson (Kresta), of Barcelona, Spain; his daughter, Kristen Johnson Schiffner (Brooke), of Denver, CO; and his five beloved grandchildren, Braden and Annika Schiffner of Denver, and Hollis, Rory, and Malin Johnson of Barcelona.

He is also survived by his brothers, Dan C. Johnson Jr. (Jo Ann), of Shawnee, KS, and Christopher G. Johnson (Cindy), of Waukee, IA; and his sisters, Mary Starr Johnson-Gerard (Walt), of Columbia, MO, Patricia Dennison, of Colorado Springs, CO, and Jannifer Lee (Jim), of Montgomery, TX.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Dan C. and Patricia (Newer) Johnson, and his brother, James Michael Johnson.
