Edward E. "Ed" Newman, 89, died May 14, 2006, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
He was born July 9, 1916, on a farm south of Rozel, the son of E.W. "Ted" and Gertrude Sibley Newman. He graduated in 1934 from Rozel High School. He was a tool and die maker and industrial sales representative his entire working career, retiring in 1981.
He belonged to First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, was a 50-year volunteer for the NJCAA Basketball Tournament, 30-year worker at the Kansas State Fair in various capacities, lifetime member of the American Legion, 50-year member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, a State Commander of the Kansas American Legion and held many other state offices, 40Et8, 60-year member of the Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge No. 124 AF and AM, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Wichita, Serendipity Sam's Camping Club and was the past director of the Hutchinson Sky Riders Drum and Bugle Corps. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, with the ground crew of the Air Force spending much time in the Philippines.
On July 25, 1936, he married Lucille Crockett in Burdett. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Craig and Susie, Kenmore, Wash.; a daughter, Carolyne Markle, Overland Park; four grandchildren, Marcus Newman, Kenmore, Wash., Doug Markle and Catherine, Fort Worth, Texas, Jeff Markle and Marcie, Centennial, Colo., and Lynsey Newman Cupples and Derek, Boethel, Wash.; two great-granddaughters, Bailey Jay Markle, Fort Worth, Texas, and Emily Lingard Markel, Centennial, Colo.; and many other nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles; a sister, Mary Coleman; and a son-in-law, Gary Markle.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 101 East 1st Hutchinson, with the Rev. Mark Conard and American Legion Chaplain the Rev. James T. Akers presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.
Memorials may be sent to Hospice House, First United Methodist Church or to the American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68 Baseball Program, all in care of the funeral home.
