Edwin L. "Ed" Ediger, 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior, June 15, 2008.
He was born Sept. 11, 1916, near Buhler, Ks, the son of Henry B. and Mary Letkeman Ediger. He graduated in 1934 from Hutchinson High School and then graduated from Hutchinson Community College. He attended Emporia State University. A Hutchinson resident since 1929, he was employed by the Hutchinson Post Office for 34 years, retiring in 1973 as superintendent of mail. After retirement, he worked for Warren Schmitt Century 21 Real Estate as a salesman for 10 years.
He belonged to the First Baptist Church, American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, Hutchinson, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was a former member of the Hutchinson Kiwanis and the Hutchinson Optimist Clubs.
Ed particularly enjoyed being a starter for the 1934 Hutchinson High School Basketball team that took third in the state and broke Wyandotte High School's 46-game winning streak. He was also an avid Jayhawk fan. Dad was a very generous and honorable man. He was beloved by his family and his caregivers. He will be missed.
He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
On Sept. 17, 1938, he married Virginia K. Risley at the First Baptist Church parsonage, Hutchinson. She died May 5, 2000. Their surviving children are: Marcia Perry and husband Fred, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Jaye Ediger and wife Sandi, Prairie Village, Ks. Other survivors: a sister, Rubye Murphy, Hutchinson; five grandchildren, Diana Drake and husband Johnny, Broken Arrow, Okla., Matt Perry, London, United Kingdom, Joshua Ediger and wife Becky, Prairie Village, Kathryn Ediger, Maui, Hawaii, and Molly Ediger, Prairie Village; three great-grandchildren, Connor, Madeline and Ella Drake; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Carrier.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2008, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson, with Pastor Stephen Taylor presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the mortuary, with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. Private family interment will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum.
Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Reno County or the First Baptist Church, in care of the mortuary.
