Elizabeth "Betty"
Ireton Hayes
January 20, 1927 – May 12, 2017
Betty dedicated her life to her family and friends, and served her community as the consummate volunteer. She served as National Committeewoman for the Kansas Young Republicans, Vice President of Kansas Day Club, and board member for the Reno County Red Cross and Hutchinson Hospital Auxiliary. She also was appointed by Gov. Robert Bennett to serve as lay person on the Agriculture Labor Relations Board. Betty loved to talk politics and kept up with current events by reading a stack of newspapers every day. Later, the internet allowed her to follow the news and her family's lives, and she loved participating in an ongoing four-way texting conversation with her daughter and granddaughters.
She cherished her husband and was truly the wind beneath his wings, campaigning for him door-to-door, accompanying him on business trips and watching from the Kansas Statehouse gallery as he served numerous years in the House of Representatives. Her most cherished times came later when twin granddaughters, Ann and Jill, arrived on the scene. Betty loved hosting Camp Mimi for the girls and even strapped on rollerblades in her 70s to join their fun.
Betty was a woman of quiet faith, and will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, elegance, hospitality and enviable wardrobe. Her advice to use proper grammar, stand up straight and to always write a thank you note will forever ring in our ears. We miss you, Mimi.
Betty was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; and her siblings, Barbara Ireton Meek, Carl Raymond Ireton, and Joanne Ireton Bingham. She is survived by: her son, Carl, Joplin, Missouri; daughter and son-in-law, Chandler and John Moenius, Prairie Village, Kansas; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at Church of the Holy Cross, 26th and Plum, Hutchinson, with Father Roger S. Lumbre officiating. Immediately following the service, a luncheon for family and friends will be held at Prairie Dunes Country Club, 4812 E. 30th Avenue. A reception for Kansas City friends will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Claridge Court, 8101 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, Betty requested gifts to the First Call for Help, Inc. of Reno County (for its back-to-school backpack program), 721 West 2nd Avenue, Hutchinson, KS 67501, or the Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute, 4225 Baltimore Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri, 64111, or in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Kansas City Kidney Consultants, Cardiovascular Consultants, the wonderful team in the Saint Luke's lab, Suite 140, and to the valet parking team at Saint Luke's for always saving her a spot in the circle drive.
