Obituary

Elmer Lewis Munger, 91, died May 24, 2006, at Elm Grove Estates.

He was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Manhattan, the son of Harold Hawley and Julia Jane Green Munger. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1936, from Kansas State University, received his Masters of Science Degree in 1938, from Kansas State University, and received his Ph.D. in 1957, from Iowa State University. He was a civil engineer, land surveyor and college professor. He worked for the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad from 1937 to 1938, for the U.S. Engineering Department from 1938 to 1946, was a missionary engineer for the Philippine Episcopal Church from 1946 to 1948, he was an engineer with Wilson and Co., Salina, in 1948, was a professor at Iowa State University from 1948 to 1951, and from 1954 to 1958, he was an engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1951 to 1954, a Professor and Dean at Norwich University, Northfield, Vt. from 1958 to 1969, Professor of Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez from 1969 to 1975, and a Professor of Civil Engineering at Michigan Tech University from 1975 to 1980. He was the co-author with Clarence J. Douglas on the "Construction Management" text book.

He belonged to the Episcopal Church, Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Engineering Educators, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Tau, Tau Beta Pi, and Chi Epsilon. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

On Dec. 28, 1939, he married Vivian Marie Bloomfield in Arkansas City. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Harold H. "Hal" Jr., Hutchinson, and John Thomas, White River Junction, Vt.; a daughter, Jane Marie Pettit, Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Margaret Furbeck, Abilene, and Julie Champlin, Milford, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, with the Rev. Tom Miles presiding.
