Obituary

Ernest M. Reimer was born on October 26, 1917, in Inman.

He was the third of eleven children born to Heinrich (Henry) F. and Katie (Baergen) Reimer.

He attended Big Lake School and graduated from Inman High School in 1937. He then attended Bethel College in Newton.

In February of 1943 he was inducted in the Army, where he served in the European Campaign. During the time he was in the service he received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. He was discharged in December of 1945 with the rank of Sergeant.

In October of 1946 he married Mary Elizabeth Miller of Hutchinson. Ernest and Mary Elizabeth had three sons, Charles, Bruce and Steven. Mary Elizabeth Miller Reimer died October 2, 1974.

Ernest worked at the Hutchinson Post Office as a mail carrier for 30 years, retiring in 1975.

In May of 1976 Ernest married Marian McDaniel. She had two grown sons. She died December of 2007.

Ernest was a member of the Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, V.F.W., Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Retired Postal Workers and was an avid bowler. He was also inducted into the Kansas Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1997.

Ernest is survived by two of his sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Debbie Reimer, South Hutchinson; and Steven and Janice Reimer, Hutchinson. Five living grandchildren, Cathy Reimer White, Mena, Alaska; Molly Reimer Benning, Collegeville, Pa.; Elizabeth Reimer Sprouse, Hutchinson; Melissa Reimer, Greenbelt, Md.; and Shawn Reimer, South Hutchinson and eight great grandchildren. Ernest also is survived by two brothers, Paul and Elverna Reimer, Inman; John and Donna Reimer, Inman and three sisters, Gertrude Zeigler, Derby; Rosalle Reiger, Colwich, and Mildred and Tom Rogers, Wichita; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Harry, Hugo and infant Eldo; sisters, O. Ruth Wiens and Emma Schierling; son Bruce Reimer; and grandson Michael Reimer.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at Elliott Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Alan D. Stambaugh presiding. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. until service Tuesday with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
