Erwin Edward Choitz, 87, went to be with his Lord on Oct. 26, 2014. He was born May 21, 1927, in Ellsworth, to Edward F. and Hulda A. (Behrens) Choitz. Erwin's father passed away when Erwin was young, and Erwin's mother later married Albert A. Wachs.
Erwin graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945, attended Stanford University under the Navy V-12 program from 1945 to 1946, and graduated from Salt City Business College in 1947. He was Senior Vice President and Controller at Bankers Investment Company, working there from 1947 to 1978. Erwin then was employed as Controller at International Homes from 1979 to 2004. Erwin served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and served in a variety of capacities, including being a member of the building committee, choir member, usher, greeter and church elder. He was also a charter member of Hutchinson Accounting Association and a member of Lions Club International. Erwin was an avid gardener, spoke German with family and friends whenever he had the opportunity, and enjoyed playing piano, accordion and harmonica.
On May 30, 1953, Erwin married the love and joy of his life, Verla Joyce McElwain, in Hutchinson. They celebrated 61 years of marriage earlier this year. She survives. Other survivors include: children, Janna M. Choitz of Hutchinson, Jon E. Choitz of Bedminster, NJ, and Mark S. Choitz and wife Malinda K. Choitz of Corvallis, Ore.; grandsons, Garrison E. Choitz of Bozeman, Mont., Grant E. Choitz of Corvallis, Ore., and Galen E. Choitz of Corvallis, Ore.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th, Hutchinson, with Pastor Chad Trunkhill presiding. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or Hospice and Home Care of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
