Eugene W. "Gene" Powell, 87, died Dec. 12, 2011, at Hospice House. He was born Nov. 26, 1924, in Hutchinson, the son of Theodore S. and Nettie Hamm Powell.
He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1942 and served in the Air Force during World War II. After the war, he attended and graduated from Anderson College in Indiana, taught school and coached basketball in Madrid, Iowa, then was principal of Smith Center, Kansas, grade school. In 1957, he returned to Hutchinson to teach and was a counselor at Liberty Junior High School. In 1970, he became principal of Partridge Grade School, retiring from education in 1978 after 29 years. He received a Master's Degree from Kansas State University in 1963. He was President of the Hutchinson-Reno Education Association, member of Kansas Board of Directors and twice a delegate to the National Education Association convention. Gene was employed at the Hutchinson Post Office as a supervisor for eight years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. He was an active lay minister all his adult life in church, a member of the Salt Minors barbershop group and a barbershop quartet.
On Aug. 30, 1946, he married Maxine Detwiler in Kansas City, Mo. She survives.
Other survivors include: their children and spouses, Kathy and Kelly Sheffler of Hutchinson, Janice and Doug Kyner of Longmont, Colo., Kenneth and Sherri Powell of Hutchinson; a sister, June Best of Hot Springs, Ark.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mabel Powell; three sisters, Louise Estep, Joy Hardacre, Eva Beth Carpenter; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at Elliott Chapel, with Reverend Jim Rhaesa and Reverend Arlo Newell officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. His casket will remain closed. A register book will be available to sign from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary and Crematory, Hutchinson. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Reno County, in care of the mortuary.
